The Most Basic Poker Tips

March 24, 2014 Category :General Off

Playing poker, whether online, on your cell or with real people at a casino or with friends is a sometimes complex yet generally hugely enjoyable experience. Thousands of books have been written offering poker advice, tips and strategy and the subject is as well documented and researched as just about anything else in the world of gambling.

It is, therefore, beyond our scope to compete with such detailed guides but we can give you some very basic pointers that will immediately improve your chances of walking away a winner.

The first and most important thing to do is maybe obvious, choose a great online poker site. All the poker sites featured here score very well over the whole range of features that matter most. When deciding on a poker site you should ask a few questions. Is the site trustworthy and reputable? Do they offer generous bonuses and promotions? Is there a good variety and number of games? Are the games and graphics professional? The answer is yes in all cases.

The next most important thing is to only play online poker when you are in the right frame of mind. Poker is a game of skill and one that requires concentration, focus, determination and confidence.

When you’re bored, tired, feeling down or, worst of all you’ve been drinking, you’ll be lacking one or more of those attributes and your chances of doing anything other than making the other players at the table richer are slim.

If you’re playing tiny stakes and have a lot of self-control and don’t mind losing a few dollars and you simply enjoy playing, then by all means play at such times. But for many people this is a bad idea and can easily lead to large losses, loose play and frustration.

The next straightforward tip is to try and find a table where the other players are at your level – or even better, below it! One of the oldest, best and truest poker quotes is, “If you can’t spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker”. Watch for the plays made by the other guys and try to cash in if there is a player who might be drunk, tired, or just plain not very good.

None of these tips will make you a millionaire or take you to the World Series but they will certainly help you avoid making the most basic of errors. Enjoy your online poker, practice, practice, practice and you might just get a bracelet one day!

Choose from any of our USA legal poker sites and claim some free money. Claiming free poker bonuses is another great tip on how to make your bankroll last longer. Especially if your new to the game, poker bonuses can help to offset some losses when you are just starting out. If you do not fully understand the terms used when playing, we have put together a poker terms page which defines some of the most basic terms you will hear while playing.

Texas Holdem Hole Card Strategy

March 2, 2014 Category :General Off

For fans of online poker, Texas Hold’em is the game that is not only the most popular but the one in which it is easy to learn. That is not to say winning is easy, of course, as much will depend on the skill of the players you face in any given game. Read on for information that could at least help you make the right choices before the flop.

In Texas Hold’em poker, two cards are dealt to each player face down (known as the “hole cards”), and bets are placed or cards are folded before the first of the three community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table, known as the “flop”. Another round of betting ensues before the fourth community card (the “turn) is dealt; then another round of betting before the fifth and final community card the “river” is dealt. With four rounds of betting before you get to see your opponents’ cards, Hold’em can be an expensive business if you make the wrong choice about whether to bet or fold after your initial hole cards have been dealt.

Clearly at that point you don’t know what community cards will appear and neither do you know what cards the other players have, so you have to make the judgement purely on the two cards in front of you. But luckily the value of your hole cards gives a strong indication as to your likelihood of winning. For instance, a pair of anything gives you a decent chance of success, though 10s or above and you’re very much in the box seat.

Of course, other factors will come into play, for instance the number of players on your table, your position in relation to the dealer and how loose the play is on the table. In general you have more information to player liberally if in a late position and should play slightly tighter in an early position. For instance, calling the big blind should be a given if you hold a pair of 4s in a late position, but if in an early position (depending on the looseness of the table) you might prefer to wait for 9s or above.

You should fold certain combinations of cards every time: any combination of unsuited cards that includes an 8 or below or any combination of suited cards including a jack or below with a two or a three. Generally speaking though, if you’ve got pairs, suited cards of 10, 6 or better or unsuited cards of ace, 10 or better, it’s time to get in on the action!

Learning to Play Poker

February 21, 2013 Category :General Off

If you are new to playing poker be sure to take the time to properly learn the games and develop some basic strategy. Every poker pro will tell you that poker is not something that just comes naturally. While some players have good instincts you still must practice and take the time the time to read some strategy articles and books.

Whether you entirely new to the games or advancing in play look for resources that can help improve your game. A must for any poker player is knowing how to count your outs plus understanding pot odds and implied pot odds. If you are unfamiliar with these terms you have a little more work to do.

Knowing your pot odds are crucial to being a profitable poker player. Pot odds tell you when it is in your best interest to call a bet or fold. By counting your number of outs and then dividing the bet amount by the pot amount you can figure out if its profitable to call the bet. Pot odds should also be considered when making a bet. You want to make sure you are betting enough so that your opponents simply do not call to chase a card. If you bet to little it will be in his best interest to call the bet. You can also bet less and give your opponent good pot odds if you slow rolling or trapping your opponent. For more on pot odds, implied pot odds and reverse pot odds see a great article explaning poker pot odds.

Also when starting out to many poker players start out playing free games. This is the worse way to learn poker. The play difference between free poker and real money poker is amazing. By playing free poker a player has no reason not to chase a card to try to hit a straight or flush. If he losses all he or she needs to do is refill their play balance. When there is real money on the line peoples habits change quickly. Rather than playing free poker start out playing at very small stakes. You can play for a long time on as little as $20 at low stakes level.

Also do not start out to high or continue to raise your stake levels before you are ready. as the stakes increase so the quality of the opposition. If you find yourself dominating at a lower stakes level move up just one level. Then slowly continue to climb the stakes ladder as you master more of the game.

For some great tips for beginner, intermediate and experienced poker players can be found on the website howtoplaypoker.co.uk. Playing More Than Poker

January 18, 2013 Category :General Off

Almost all poker players also enjoy some casino action and betting on sports. Sports Betting is probably more popular than playing casino games because most poker players do not rely on luck. They like to have a say in the outcome of the game. In poker any very good or professional player will tell you it is not about the cards that you are dealt, it is how you play them. A good player can win with almost any starting hand by relying on their own skill to win.

The same is with sports betting. While you personally cannot help to determine the outcome of the game, you can do some research and look at stats and try to handicap the match up. While there is no such thing as a perfect bet, the more information you have available the better of an educated decision you can make. Playing casino games however you are almost always at the mercy of the cards.

Before you gamble online make sure you do your homework whether it is poker or sports betting. Even in blackjack there are certain strategies that can help you win more and loose less. By following proper blackjack strategy you can see your winning streaks become longer and your losing streaks shorter. You always have to take the time to learn the game and develop strategies to help your gambling be more profitable. This is especially true for poker.

Poker is a skill game and must be treated like a sport and you are the athlete. The more you practice the better you will become. Doyle Brunson once said, “Texas Hold’em takes a minute to learn but a lifetime to master”. You can never read to many articles or books on playing poker.

Many poker pros have written books giving pointers on how they play and share their experiences to help better your game. One book I personally really enjoyed is Phil Gordons Little Green Book. It is packed full of useful information and he discusses his techniques and why he employs them. After reading this book I can honestly say my poker game became better.

So make sure you do your research before gambling online or in a casino. If you want to rely on pure luck you might as well go play a slot machine!

Playing Poker on Your Macintosh

January 17, 2013 Category :General Off

If you are using a Macintosh computer you are probably aware that your choices of online poker sites are somewhat limited. Not every online poker site offers a software version for Macintosh users. Generally only the larger stand alone poker sites will offer a Mac compatible version of their software or you will find certain poker networks will have a Macintosh version available. If playing on a network you can use any of the “skins” that operate on the network to use your Macintosh machine.

If you are looking for a poker site to use your Mac check out http//:poker-macintosh.com to see a great listing of Macintosh poker sites. There are still several great options for Macintosh users and you can have a great online poker experience at any of these recommended sites. If you also like to play online casino games the website also lists the best Casinos available for Mac users.

If you live the USA you can play online poker at Carbon Poker but non USA residents have many more options. Play at the largest poker sites on the Internet with your Macintosh including PokerStars, 888Poker, Muchos Poker and Party Poker. Be sure to claim your sign up bonus at all of these sites as it is free money. All the Mac poker sites offer a great sign up bonus on your first deposit and many also offer reload bonuses on subsequent deposits.

One of the main reasons there are less online poker sites that have a Macintosh version of their software is simply money. It costs the poker site a substantial amount of capital to develop a Mac version of their software and that is why you will find only the larger poker sites doing so. With the number of Mac users growing substantially in the last few years, especially with their tablets, you can expect more poker sites to soon offer a Macintosh version of the software.

You can still play Poker on Macintosh, it is just the number of choices available are less than if you were using a PC. The good news however is if a poker site offers a Mac version of their software you can bet they are an established and reputable online poker site.

Playing High Stakes Poker

January 16, 2013 Category :General Off

A common mistake some newer online poker players make is to play at stakes higher than their ability allows. This often happens if a new player wins some pots or tournaments at a lower stakes level and thinks he or she is seasoned enough to play with the big boys. Realistically any new player should stay below the $2/$4 blind level until they have at least 1 year of solid poker under their belt. As Doyle Brunson once said, “Texas Hold’em takes a minute to learn but a Lifetime to Master” and this is a true statement.

Playing high stakes poker is like fighting a heavy weight fight. The opponents have trained and are at the top of their game playing for big money. Many professional poker players play high stakes and love it when an inexperienced player sits down at the table. These guys play poker for a living and obviously are successful at it. If they are making a living by playing poker the money they win is coming out of someones pocket and a lot of times it is the inexperienced players who roll over so easy.

Even in my own personal experience, several times I thought I was ready to play $10/$20 blinds and above only to see my whole bankroll wiped out in one quick evening. The game changes at higher stakes as it is more aggressive and bluffing becomes a bigger part of the game. You really have to have your head in the game without any distractions. You may win a pot here and there but over the long term you can lose a huge amount of cash. One big pot can really swing your bankroll one way or the other.

Some think they will sit at a high stakes table and only play solid cards. Well guess what? The professional players will catch on to that quickly. If you only play great starting hands and only bet when you have top pair or better you will quickly see everyone around the table fold. Ever wonder why Dan Harrington gets deep in tournaments but never seems to win? It because he plays very tight. In tournaments playing tight can work in the first half of the tournament but you have to loosen up your play in the second half if you want to win the whole thing.

One thing I do when playing higher stakes is to always keep my bets about the same amount regardless if I a pair of Aces in the hole or 9/10 suited. This way the other players will never quite know what hand I am starting out with. If keeps the others player guessing but you can also expect other player to use the same strategy.

So before you start to play High Stakes Poker be sure you are ready. You should have plenty of experience under your belt and also slowly climb up the stakes levels. It is very hard to be successful moving from a $1/$2 table to a $10/$20 table without any practice in between.
