What Are Side Pots in Poker?

October 12, 2019 Category :General Off

If you are new to playing poker, you probably have not had a lot of opportunities to learn about the side pot. It is something that is a part of every poker game and is very important as a part of an all-in bet.

Every USA legal poker site has a side pot option in all their tournaments and cash games, so let’s take a closer look at this phenomenon.

A side pot is created every time someone makes an all-in bet but doesn’t have enough chips for other bets. Let’s say Player No. 1 has a total of $25 in chips and goes all-in pre-flop. On the other hand, Player Nos. 2 and 3 have $100 and $200, respectively. Now — what happens when No. 1 makes an all-in bet?

Well, two players can either decide to call or fold. If they call, they will both have to invest a total of $25 each to the main pot, making a total pot of $75.

However, Player Nos. 2 and 3 still have a lot of chips left and want to continue the betting round. Since Player No. 1 cannot follow them, as he has invested all of his chips, Nos. 2 and 3 must create a side pot. This pot is won by either Player No. 2 or Player No. 3 as Player No. 1 cannot take part in it.

Let’s say that Player No. 1 has the best hand when they show their hole cards. It means that he will take his prize, which is the $75 that was bet in the main pot. However, he cannot claim anything from the side pot as it was out of his betting scope.

Now, let’s say that Player No. 2 has the second-best, meaning all the additional chips that Nos. 2 and 3 bet in a side pot now belong to him. Basically, in our case, only Player No. 3 loses chips, and player Nos. 1 and 2 win. It’s even possible for No. 2 to win more money if the side pot was bigger than the main pot.

Many USA poker sites offer great online poker versions, and you are free to register and test your luck and skills by playing poker on them. It is a great opportunity to see how a side pot works and how you should use to improve your poker strategy and your overall success in this game.

Make sure to check out poker bonuses offered on these sites, which can help you jump-start your online poker experience.

Tournament Poker vs. Cash Games – What Are the Differences?

April 27, 2019 Category :General Off

Poker is the most popular card game in the world and has tournaments organized all over the globe. However, some people often do not take part in tournaments and are perfectly happy with playing cash games. How are these two different and what makes them unique?

If you like playing USA legal poker, you probably want to try both types of poker at one point of your life, since they both bring an equal amount of entertainment.

First of all, cash games are almost always played using one table, while tournaments usually feature a lot more players and can be played at multiple tables.

Furthermore, in cash games, you usually pay a certain amount of money and chips that are related to the amount you invested. There are a minimum and maximum buy-in amounts, but the number of chips of players may differ according to how much they paid for chips. Tournaments usually have fixed buy-ins, which means that everybody gets pretty much the same amount of chips after buying in their place in the tournament.

Players can also quit cash games anytime they want and exchange their chips for cash. This option is not available when playing tournaments where players hit the rail only after there are no more chips left. In tournaments, prizes are won by the best players, with the highest chunk of the prize pool going to the first-placed player.

The cost of games is pretty much the same all the time in cash games, and its cost is usually determined before the game. However, the cost of blinds increases in tournaments after certain time intervals.

Finally, you can always return to a cash game if you lose all your chips by buying additional chips. However, if you lose your chips in a tournament, you cannot return to the game. In other words, once you are out – you are out, and there is no return.

As you can see, there are a couple of important differences between these two types of games, and it is up to you to choose which one you prefer more. Both types have their advantages and disadvantages, but bring the same amount of entertainment to poker lovers.

Some of the best USA poker sites will allow you to choose which type of game you want to play. If you don’t have much poker experience, make sure to start with cash games that require small buy-ins, and then feel free to switch to tournaments when you improve your skills.

The Most Basic Poker Tips

March 24, 2014 Category :General Off

Playing poker, whether online, on your cell or with real people at a casino or with friends is a sometimes complex yet generally hugely enjoyable experience. Thousands of books have been written offering poker advice, tips and strategy and the subject is as well documented and researched as just about anything else in the world of gambling.

It is, therefore, beyond our scope to compete with such detailed guides but we can give you some very basic pointers that will immediately improve your chances of walking away a winner.

The first and most important thing to do is maybe obvious, choose a great online poker site. All the poker sites featured here score very well over the whole range of features that matter most. When deciding on a poker site you should ask a few questions. Is the site trustworthy and reputable? Do they offer generous bonuses and promotions? Is there a good variety and number of games? Are the games and graphics professional? The answer is yes in all cases.

The next most important thing is to only play online poker when you are in the right frame of mind. Poker is a game of skill and one that requires concentration, focus, determination and confidence.

When you’re bored, tired, feeling down or, worst of all you’ve been drinking, you’ll be lacking one or more of those attributes and your chances of doing anything other than making the other players at the table richer are slim.

If you’re playing tiny stakes and have a lot of self-control and don’t mind losing a few dollars and you simply enjoy playing, then by all means play at such times. But for many people this is a bad idea and can easily lead to large losses, loose play and frustration.

The next straightforward tip is to try and find a table where the other players are at your level – or even better, below it! One of the oldest, best and truest poker quotes is, “If you can’t spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker”. Watch for the plays made by the other guys and try to cash in if there is a player who might be drunk, tired, or just plain not very good.

None of these tips will make you a millionaire or take you to the World Series but they will certainly help you avoid making the most basic of errors. Enjoy your online poker, practice, practice, practice and you might just get a bracelet one day!

Choose from any of our USA legal poker sites and claim some free money. Claiming free poker bonuses is another great tip on how to make your bankroll last longer. Especially if your new to the game, poker bonuses can help to offset some losses when you are just starting out. If you do not fully understand the terms used when playing, we have put together a poker terms page which defines some of the most basic terms you will hear while playing.

Texas Holdem Hole Card Strategy

March 2, 2014 Category :General Off

For fans of online poker, Texas Hold’em is the game that is not only the most popular but the one in which it is easy to learn. That is not to say winning is easy, of course, as much will depend on the skill of the players you face in any given game. Read on for information that could at least help you make the right choices before the flop.

In Texas Hold’em poker, two cards are dealt to each player face down (known as the “hole cards”), and bets are placed or cards are folded before the first of the three community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table, known as the “flop”. Another round of betting ensues before the fourth community card (the “turn) is dealt; then another round of betting before the fifth and final community card the “river” is dealt. With four rounds of betting before you get to see your opponents’ cards, Hold’em can be an expensive business if you make the wrong choice about whether to bet or fold after your initial hole cards have been dealt.

Clearly at that point you don’t know what community cards will appear and neither do you know what cards the other players have, so you have to make the judgement purely on the two cards in front of you. But luckily the value of your hole cards gives a strong indication as to your likelihood of winning. For instance, a pair of anything gives you a decent chance of success, though 10s or above and you’re very much in the box seat.

Of course, other factors will come into play, for instance the number of players on your table, your position in relation to the dealer and how loose the play is on the table. In general you have more information to player liberally if in a late position and should play slightly tighter in an early position. For instance, calling the big blind should be a given if you hold a pair of 4s in a late position, but if in an early position (depending on the looseness of the table) you might prefer to wait for 9s or above.

You should fold certain combinations of cards every time: any combination of unsuited cards that includes an 8 or below or any combination of suited cards including a jack or below with a two or a three. Generally speaking though, if you’ve got pairs, suited cards of 10, 6 or better or unsuited cards of ace, 10 or better, it’s time to get in on the action!

Learning to Play Poker

February 21, 2013 Category :General Off

If you are new to playing poker be sure to take the time to properly learn the games and develop some basic strategy. Every poker pro will tell you that poker is not something that just comes naturally. While some players have good instincts you still must practice and take the time the time to read some strategy articles and books.

Whether you entirely new to the games or advancing in play look for resources that can help improve your game. A must for any poker player is knowing how to count your outs plus understanding pot odds and implied pot odds. If you are unfamiliar with these terms you have a little more work to do.

Knowing your pot odds are crucial to being a profitable poker player. Pot odds tell you when it is in your best interest to call a bet or fold. By counting your number of outs and then dividing the bet amount by the pot amount you can figure out if its profitable to call the bet. Pot odds should also be considered when making a bet. You want to make sure you are betting enough so that your opponents simply do not call to chase a card. If you bet to little it will be in his best interest to call the bet. You can also bet less and give your opponent good pot odds if you slow rolling or trapping your opponent. For more on pot odds, implied pot odds and reverse pot odds see a great article explaning poker pot odds.

Also when starting out to many poker players start out playing free games. This is the worse way to learn poker. The play difference between free poker and real money poker is amazing. By playing free poker a player has no reason not to chase a card to try to hit a straight or flush. If he losses all he or she needs to do is refill their play balance. When there is real money on the line peoples habits change quickly. Rather than playing free poker start out playing at very small stakes. You can play for a long time on as little as $20 at low stakes level.

Also do not start out to high or continue to raise your stake levels before you are ready. as the stakes increase so the quality of the opposition. If you find yourself dominating at a lower stakes level move up just one level. Then slowly continue to climb the stakes ladder as you master more of the game.

For some great tips for beginner, intermediate and experienced poker players can be found on the website howtoplaypoker.co.uk. Playing More Than Poker

January 18, 2013 Category :General Off

Almost all poker players also enjoy some casino action and betting on sports. Sports Betting is probably more popular than playing casino games because most poker players do not rely on luck. They like to have a say in the outcome of the game. In poker any very good or professional player will tell you it is not about the cards that you are dealt, it is how you play them. A good player can win with almost any starting hand by relying on their own skill to win.

The same is with sports betting. While you personally cannot help to determine the outcome of the game, you can do some research and look at stats and try to handicap the match up. While there is no such thing as a perfect bet, the more information you have available the better of an educated decision you can make. Playing casino games however you are almost always at the mercy of the cards.

Before you gamble online make sure you do your homework whether it is poker or sports betting. Even in blackjack there are certain strategies that can help you win more and loose less. By following proper blackjack strategy you can see your winning streaks become longer and your losing streaks shorter. You always have to take the time to learn the game and develop strategies to help your gambling be more profitable. This is especially true for poker.

Poker is a skill game and must be treated like a sport and you are the athlete. The more you practice the better you will become. Doyle Brunson once said, “Texas Hold’em takes a minute to learn but a lifetime to master”. You can never read to many articles or books on playing poker.

Many poker pros have written books giving pointers on how they play and share their experiences to help better your game. One book I personally really enjoyed is Phil Gordons Little Green Book. It is packed full of useful information and he discusses his techniques and why he employs them. After reading this book I can honestly say my poker game became better.

So make sure you do your research before gambling online or in a casino. If you want to rely on pure luck you might as well go play a slot machine!
