Where is Online Poker Heading?

November 14, 2012 Category :General Off

While online poker is still very popular among US residents and players from throughout the world, it is far from its peak back when Chris Moneymaker won the big one with under a $50 satellite buy-in. In recent years online poker has gotten a few black eyes from Super User Scandals to the recent crackdown by the US Department of Justice. With all that said online poker is safer now than it ever has been, and soon will be available to US residents on a state by state basis regulated by the gambling and lottery officials of that state.

Certain states have already passed legislation legalizing online poker and we cannot wait until it is available to play throughout the US. Without a doubt some states will be every slow to join the party legalizing online poker, but states like Delaware actually hope it will entice poker players to move to that state. Governor Jack Markell stated in a recent USA Today article that he fully expects some professional poker players to move to the state to take advantage of their online poker offering. Delaware is also considering allowing online casino games like Blackjack and slots.

We are astonished that it has taken this long for the United States to start to take advantage of the huge sums of money legal online poker will offer the states through taxes. Just like we saw with the recent expansion of casino gambling to states outside of New Jersey and Nevada, online poker will be the next tax base and revenue generator each and every state will try to capture. The taxes will not only provide jobs but will also fill budget deficits so many states face today. Regardless whether online poker is legal or not, those who want to play will find a way to do so, so we applaud the states for finally realizing this and taking advantage of the taxes and keeping US dollars in the US.

The only major down side to this recent turn of events is that legal online poker will be regulated at the state level. Each state will have their own online poker room so the player base will not be as big as it could be had it been offered at the Federal level. You will have to be a resident of that state in order to poker online. Regardless this is a huge step in the right direction and undoubtedly, eventually we will see online poker available throughout the United States.

Find Bonuses Galore

November 14, 2012 Category :General Off

A huge part of playing online poker is taking advantage of the many bonuses that online poker sites offer. The bonuses offered by online poker sites would be just as if you would be receiving comp’s at a land based casino or poker room. Online poker rooms cannot send you to a show or offer you a free dinner so they give you free cash instead. In all honesty we would rather have the free cash rather than a buffet dinner anyway.

When you are choosing an online poker site to play at, the bonus being offered must be taken into consideration. Many online poker sites share or operate on the same poker network and as a result offer the exact same poker experience. Not all the poker sites however offer the same bonus. If a poker site is a little newer or looking to increase their player base expect to find a little larger bonus. They offer a generous bonus in order to entice new players to play at their site. Another good rule of thumb is that if a poker site accepts USA players the bonus may be a little larger. Because of all the recent turmoil in the USA poker market many sites are scrambling to attract new USA players and offering a large bonus is one way to achieve that.

Beside the amount of the poker bonus, how easy the bonus is to earn also has to be a very important factor. A poker site can offer a huge bonus but if it is too hard to earn the bonus amount ends up expiring and becomes worthless. Be sure to read the bonus terms and conditions to see how easy the bonus is to clear. The online poker sites that operate on the Revolution Poker Network (formerly the Cake Poker Network) offer very easy bonuses to earn. At all of these poker sites you earn $1 of your bonus for just every $2.38 paid in rake and/or tournament fee’s. Some poker sites require as high as spending $10 for just earning $1 of your bonus. You can imagine how long it would take to clear even a $100 bonus.

For help in determining which poker bonus you should claim check out www.pokerbonushelp.com which has a great listing of USA and International  poker sites. Regardless of where you live you can find a great poker bonus and start earning some cash for your bankroll.

Most Common Mistakes made at the Poker Table

October 6, 2012 Category :General Off

Even the best players make mistakes. And most of these mistakes are made against your better judgment. These are mistakes made when your gut is telling you to fold and get out of the game, but you somehow end up convincing yourself that you should do otherwise. Sometimes thinking the wrong thing can damage your game more than you’d expect.

Thinking Your Opponent is Bluffing

Sometimes, when you have a relatively weak hand, you may give yourself reasons to not fold. It’s an instinct that’s hard to fight – most players don’t like giving up. So you convince yourself that your opponent may be bluffing and that going into the final play might be profitable to you.

This isn’t a problem in limit poker, when the bets are minimal compared to the pot but in no-limit poker, this kind of thinking can be especially dangerous – usually the bet is often as large as the pot. Calling into a strong bet with a mediocre hand can be a mistake and can usually be avoided by knowing when to fold.

Not Allowing Yourself to fold

At times, the game appears to be going in your favor when suddenly it turns, and you realize that you can easily be beaten by stronger hands. But somehow, you don’t want to back down. Maybe it’s because you don’t want to lose face, maybe you feel you still have a chance; either way when your bet is called and raised it’s a sign that your best bet is to fold.

Staying Longer than You can Afford To

This is one of the most crippling thoughts in the game. If you’re losing and consider staying till you can get back what you lost, then it’s very likely that it’s time for you to leave.

The truth is that the fact that you’re losing is probably because you’re just not playing well enough, or that you’re tired or that you’ve been playing too long. All this contributes to bad game play and therefore, losses and if that’s the case, trying to stay till you get back to even can be a dangerous mistake. You will probably end up being stuck longer and longer and the longer you stay the more your bankroll is at risk. Always go down a limit if your bankroll can´t effort it. You should always stick at proper limits for your bankroll.

Thinking You Have to Bet

Aggressive players are certainly found among many poker pros. In no-limit play, aggression is certainly the right kind of play. But when betting, aggression needs to be contained such that when you bet, it is because you want to and not because you feel like you have to.
This is particularly true of players who have a reputation of being aggressive; they end up betting to show strength even though the right move would probably be checking and folding to a bet.

Digging Yourself Deeper
In that particular moment, a bit of money lost or won because you already seem to be behind may not seem to be a big deal. But the truth is, if you’ve started thinking that way, then it’s time to walk away from the table. Where you are in terms of winnings, high or low, should not affect how you bet. Instead, the strength of your hand should be the deciding factor.
When you throw in you ‘small’ bets, they may not seem to amount to much at that time, but over the course of the game, they can add up to a lot.

Take a Break from Poker

August 18, 2012 Category :General Off

Poker can be a grind. Although it is one of our favorite past times it is a game of skill and at times can be mentally exhausting. When we need a break from poker we will at times play some Blackjack. Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games because it is easy to learn and the house edge is very small.

If you also like to take a break a poker time to time, give Blackjack a shot. One great feature about blackjack is through the use of some basic strategy you can actually lower the house edge even further. Blackjack is also a game where you can go on extremely long winning streaks. Many blackjack players will use a progressive betting style which allows them to take full advantage if a long winning streak occurs. There are many variations of progressive betting and you need to find one where you are comfortable with the amount of chips you are placing.

Personally I use a “take and double” betting scheme. Under this scheme I will always take back my first winning bet. So for example if I wager $25 I will take my winnings on my first win. Then betting $25 again if I win I let the $50 ride. I already recouped my initial bet and am now playing with the casinos money. So every other win I double my bet. It is not uncommon to win 10 – 15 hands in a row in Blackjack. So under these circumstances my bets would look like the following starting with a $25 bet.

Bet 1 – $25, Bet 2 -$25

Bet 3 – $50, Bet 4 -$50 (keeping my $50 win)

Bet 5 – $100, Bet 6 – $100

Bet 7 – $200, Bet 8 $200

Bet 9 – $400, Bet 10 – $400.

Say you lose the 10th bet. Under the above conditions an initial $25 bet won me $1150! You need to develop what you feel comfortable with. Many players will let half of their winnings ride every hand or every other hand. It all depends what you are comfortable with betting. When you do go on a nice winning run you can find yourself at the table max pretty quickly, and if you are at a land based casino the table can get rowdy with hand slaps and fist bumps when there is that much money on the table.

If you want to try some Blackjack you can easily play online. There are plenty of USA friendly Blackjack casinos to choose from. So if you need a mental break from poker, give blackjack a try. Many online poker sites also offer either a full online casino or at least offer online blackjack. If you want to feel like you are at actual casino play at a Live Dealer Blackjack site and watch the dealer in real time and your cards are being dealt.
